Notes for 02/16 MLK 217
Paul Librarian
- Highly suggest getting a library pin and library card because as a student you get access to a bunch of helpful resources such as scholarly blogs, books, AP Style for journalists, and resources that are much more helpful than google or wikipedia
There are tips available on how to cite in APA and MLA style
Articles and Databases can be organized depending on the journalist or professor
put into consideration to your topic and which topic applies best to your search
You can also see someone in person on the 2nd floor on the reference desk
They can also refer you to other students and faculty to help you out
Theres also references by appt on the 4th floor
WIKIPEDIA
It can be helpful, but not the most resourceful
people can still change it, but there is a “reference and notes” section.
go directly to the references
search SJSU library catalog
“classic catalog” displays a little bit better and more organized/ efficient— recommended
We also have access to San Jose Public Library
it may not always have the best scholarly resources, but nonetheless opens up more resources more available to K-12 books and such
same catalog shared with SJSU/ King Library
23 branches
children’s books, etc
Ebook is also available to students and faculty
You can read it online or download it
The catalog is organized like google search algorithm wise.. so you really have look and read on what book will best best for you
COPYRIGHT
you actually can’t be sued for copyright
you’re good through using it for Canvas but if you use it on your blog you can’t do that
they draw a line for educational use vs. public use
Libraries along California can switch print books (loan) to each other, but that doesn’t work for e-books
be aware of due dates! overdue fines can rack up
you can check box to filter out peer reviewed and scholarly articles
make sure to do Relevance because it automatically goes to Date Newest
this is for engineers and science people
You can also make folders to organize everything for your search
You can also cite it
- bibliographic manager
RefWorks
makes bibliographies for you
it also puts references in the texts
You can also request an article through the article request page
LinkPlus is faster and this is the big database between the other libraries in CA
GetText- full online text and you can access it through PDF
Speak to a history librarian to see an actual person during the Japanese Internment Camp
Kathy Blackmer- various ethnic studies
STUDENT SERVICES
you can stay in the library for late hours
they have desktop computers
student computer services 4th floor- headphones, adaptors, Mac, PCs,
trick: just call to renew because its only 4 hours
The library also offers fun days such as...
Adult coloring, lego day, paper airplane day
destress and destroy

(n) the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics.
However, the research is still very young, and there are major ethical questions attached to editing human DNA that the emergence of CRISPR makes even more pressing: Wouldn’t editing out inheritable traits from the human population simply amount to eugenics?

The church mentioned the controversy of eugenics because it is altering with God's image he has created for humanity.

A letter to our daughter
By Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan
Many of the greatest opportunities for your generation will come from giving everyone access to the internet.
People often think of the internet as just for entertainment or communication. But for the majority of people in the world, the internet can be a lifeline.
It provides education if you don't live near a good school. It provides health information on how to avoid diseases or raise healthy children if you don't live near a doctor. It provides financial services if you don't live near a bank. It provides access to jobs and opportunities if you don't live in a good economy.
The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created.
Yet still more than half of the world's population -- more than 4 billion people -- don't have access to the internet.
If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease.
This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed.
But together we can succeed and create a more equal world.
-----
This excerpt was composed by founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg along with his wife Priscilla Chan. It was a letter written for their young daughter in hopes that technology will serve a great purpose in her future and young generations to come.
I like how the piece of writing is split into short paragraphs of only a couple of sentences. It is easy to read, evokes a strong message, all in all is authentic. I like how it is straight to the point, includes examples that most people can relate to. I like the overall message that he is trying to portray— which is to create a difference and positive change in the world through the innovation of the internet.
It embodies a sense of connectivity in the world and even though we are not his daughter, the message can be applied to anyone’s life. This is only a portion of the actual letter, but even in conclusion to this part of the excerpt, it has a strong ending “But together we can succeed and create a more equal world. They don’t use complicated words, run-on sentences, or clutter to send out their message. It is clear and straight to the point, leaving out any room for misinterpretation.

About Me
Hi my name is Margaret Dejan, but I go by Megan. I was born and raised in San Francisco so I'm used to the busy, big city lifestyle. It's currently my third year at SJSU and I'm a Public Relations major and Computer Science minor. I am thrilled with the innovation and rapid growth of technology but have a passion for writing and connecting all types of people and industries. I'm an avid traveler and have a great desire for exploration and adventure. My wanderlust has taken me to study abroad in Paris and travel throughout Europe. I used to dance for 16 years as a competitive hip-hop dancer, but now those dancing days are behind me and I enjoy going to the gym, reading books, and hiking in my spare time. I'm always open to a new adventure, change of scenery, or trying something I've never done before. I don't care where, with who, or what I'm doing, as long as I'm learning something new and constantly growing.

I'm always open to a new adventure, change of scenery, or trying something I've never done before. I don't care where, with who, or what I'm doing, as long as I'm learning something new and constantly growing.
Orange chip
As I lay the chip on the palm of my hand, I notice its rough edges that create the boarder of the chip. It has a bumpy surface with burnt, little specs as if made with a ball point pen. The orange color of the chip itself brings me back to the color of the desert sand during my winter break Joshua Tree getaway. I'd honestly rather be back on break, eating a big bag of these chips with a bunch of friends, watching a movie, rather than sitting here in class describing this chip. It's making me hungry! I take a little nibble to acquire its taste. This reminds me of the food tastings in high school where my tummy would grumble as we tasted small samples of food that would not suffice for my starvation. It has a kick of saltiness, maybe like a pretzel or a french fry. The chip then dissolves in my mouth into tiny pieces. It has a slightly sweet taste when I put it real close to my nose. When bitten into it, it has both a crunchy and crackly sound. Now I just want more and I'm hungry.
Apricot
I'm not sure exactly what it is. The first adjective that pops up into my mind is "pruny", and that's not even a real word. So let's say it has a prune- like texture, compared to how my hands get when I've been in the shower or pool for too long. It's a dried fruit, but I don't know which one. It has a light brown color and is squishy and round in size. When I bite into it, it's chewy, slightly sweet, but has a strong bitter aftertaste. The outside surface of this dried fruit is soft but inside has a sticky, gummy feel. I'm not fond of the apricot dried fruit.
Super Bowl 50
I'm not a huge football fan, but the Super Bowl 50 is being held in the Bay Area this year. Growing up in San Francisco Bay Area, I'm used to all these events constantly happening from the SF Giants and Golden State Warriors Championships along with the Wrestle Mania within the last two years. It's what I love about living in the Bay Area-- there's always something to do, something new to try out, and the city is always filled with such enthusiasm for endless activities. It's events like these that fuel the community's diversity and liveliness. I didn't even know the intensity and significance of the event until I saw all the rage about it through social media and insanely expensive events that were going on throughout the city. Celebrities from all over are performing and it's a real big deal.
The most interesting story I've read was about flight attendants being trained to listen and spot out those involved with human trafficking. Super Bowl 50 brings people from all over the nation where women are being sold to the men with lots of money. This surprises me as there are other safety posts surfing the web in precaution to the violence and crime of the Super Bowl.
Aware of the madness of this nationwide event, I take precaution towards the safety warnings, but still participate the events throughout the city. Last weekend my mom and I went to the Embarcadero and checked out Super Bowl City with tons of free interactive activities for the fans. It's always fun to see people brought together, enjoying and celebrating events like Super Bowl 50.
